What if you formed a second skeleton on top of the one you already have? That is what happens with the Stone Man syndrome. It is an extremely rare (1 in 2 million) genetic disorder.

The mutation causes muscles, tendons and ligaments of a person turn into bones. Essentially, it causes a second skeleton to grow within the body, often fusing or blending with the existing bones. Bone formed due to this will be identical to “normal” bone.

So far only about 800 people worldwide are known to have this disorder. It is also called as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) or Münchmeyer disease.

Symptoms usually become noticeable in early childhood and they often have malformed big toes. It may come either after a physical injury or with no apparent reason. It is a severe, disabling disorder with no current cure or treatment.

It is the only known medical condition where one organ system changes into another. Even minor injuries can cause joints to become permanently fused as new bone forms and replaces the damaged muscle tissue.
Activities that increase the risk of falling or soft tissue injury should be avoided, as even minor injury may provoke the bone formation.
